Lesson 12: Hammer-On / Pull-Off Hamer-on's and Pull-offs are technique's that generate a great sound but are also one of, if not the greatest tool guitarists have to increase speed while playing guitar! It's a simple concept. We're trying to play notes, without picking the string. A hammer on, means that the string your fretting is currently ringing, and you quickly slam your finger onto a higher fret shifting the note without disrupting the string vibration.
Pull-offs A Pull-off is for when you want to go to a lower fret on your current string. It's a little tougher than the hammer-on. What you have to do is have the lower note pressed at the same time as the current note. Then you pull your finger off the current note, essentially playing the string with your left hand (assuming your a right handed player). The pull-off is tough to perfect, but when you do your playing speed will increase dramatically. Listen carefully to rock / metal solo's and acoustic riffs, professional guitarists use these techniques for so many notes it's unbelieveable. Ever see a guitar player in concert, who looked like he was going insane with his fretting hand but just calmly picking a note every so often with his picking hand? Now you know why! < Previous | NiceaXe.com | Lesson Thirteen >
